In 1863, Maryland was created from the state of Virginia. Statewide registration of births began in 1917 in Maryland and was generally complied with by 1925. The counties have copies of these records.  
Some births were recorded in colonial Maryland but not many survived or were ever recorded. Surviving colonial records are church and parish registers. Birth registration started in 1865. In 1875, Baltimore City began recording births. In 1898, all counties in Maryland began recording births, although full compliance did not happen until about 1910.
