The 8th Regiment, West Virginia Infantry organized in the Kanawha Valley in the fall of 1861 with volunteers from Boone, Clay, Fayette, Jackson, Kanawha, Raleigh, Wyoming Putnam, Mason, Logan and Braxton Counties.
