First settlements date back to the Neolithic, Bronze Age, and Iron Age. Documents mention pre-Roman inhabitants (possibly Raetians, Gauls, Sabines, Benacenses) and suggests Etruscan connections. The first certain news of Riva is from Roman times.

Jurisdictions:

  • Pre-Roman Era: Inhabited by various tribes, possibly including Raetians, Gauls, Sabines, Benacenses.
  • Roman Era: Aggregated to the municipium of Brescia.
  • Post-Roman Empire: Under the control of Goths, Lombards, and Franks.
  • Later: Sphere of influence of the Prince Bishop of Trento, but remained a free municipality with its own statutes.
  • Various Periods: Domination by the Scaligeri (Verona), Visconti, and Venetians, alternating with periods under the Prince Bishop of Trento.
  • 17th Century: Constantly part of the Bishopric of Trento.
  • Napoleonic Era: Followed the fate of Trentino.
  • Habsburg Rule: Under Austrian control.
  • 1919: Transition to Italy.
  • World War II (1943-1945): De facto annexed to the Third Reich (Alpenvorland).
  • Post-WWII: Part of Italy.

  • World War I: Stronghold never conquered by Italy.
  • World War II: Annexed to the Third Reich. Resistance movement and Nazi repression (June 28, 1944: murder of 16 people).
  • 1969: Official name changed from "Riva" to "Riva del Garda."[1]
