Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, New York Genealogy
Historical Facts
Nicknamed Pokespsie and often listed as such in probate records.
Was the 2nd capital of New York because it was spared from the battles of American Revolution War. It was here the state ratification convention was held which included Alexander Hamilton, John Jay and George Clinton, to ratify the United States Constitution and with the ratification of it, New York entered the union as the 11th of original 13 states.
The city and town are considered one and the same.
