Established in the 4th century BC as an outpost of the Samnites.

Jurisdictions the municipality belonged to:

  • Kingdom of Naples (18th century).
  • Kingdom of Italy (1861).
  • Became part of the Republic of Italy (1946).

  • Destroyed by the Vandals and Saracens after the fall of Rome.
  • Conquered by the Lombards in the 6th century, who built a castle there.
  • Occupied by the Allies in 1943.
