In the 1840s the Harrisburg State Hospital was opened to help with treat for the mentally ill. This institution took in individuals from throughout Pennsylvania. by the 1940s there were approximately twenty institutions in the state to assist with psychiatric treatment. Some of the institutions were initially called poor farms or county homes.
