British Colonization (1889-1901)[edit | edit source]
In 1889 the chiefs of Niue reached out to the British to provide protection against other nations. The British Protectorate was finalized on 19 October 1900. Niue was brought within the boundaries of New Zealand on 11 June 1901. [1]

Niue was included within the boundaries of New Zealand on 11 June 1901. The New Zealand Parliament restored self-government in Niue in 1974. [2]
