The population in 2001 was estimated to be 4.4 million. The major cities of Moldova are Chiinu (Kishinev) 735,000; Tiraspol 194,000, Balti 157,000; Bender (Tighina) 137,000.
The population consists of several ethnic groups: Moldovan 64%, Ukrainian 14%, Russian 13%, Gagauzi 4%, Bulgarian 2%, Other 2%. The majority religion is eastern Orthodox 98.5%, and then Jewish 1.5%.[1]
