Midlothian County Council was abolished in 1975. Most of Midlothian's territory went to a new district called Midlothian within the Lothian region. The Midlothian district was smaller than the area of the pre-1975 county, with the parts of the pre-1975 county going to other districts being:
- Currie, Balerno, Ratho and Newbridge to the city of Edinburgh.
- Musselburgh burgh and parish of Inveresk (which included the villages of Inveresk, Wallyford and Whitecraig) to East Lothian.
- The Calders (East Calder, Midcalder and West Calder) and the Midlothian part of Livingston to West Lothian.
- Heriot and Stow parishes to the Ettrick and Lauderdale district of the Borders region.

- Midlothian Local Studies and Archive Service holds a huge range of information about the history and culture of Midlothian. We are now based in Dalkeith Library, with our special, fragile and rare collections now held securely off-site at our Archive centre. (Use telephone or e-mail to tell the library in advance which items you wish to study. Items have to be retrieved out of storage for your use, so advance notice is required to ensure you won't be disappointed.)

- We hold the historical records of the City of Edinburgh Council and its previous authorities. Our aim is to preserve these records and make them available to members of the public.

Register Offices
At ScotlandsPeople one can search the indexes and obtain a digital copy of the record for a small fee within minutes. However, sometimes additional help is available from local registrars. For example, proof of death and close family relationship can make more recent records available that would otherwise be restricted by privacy laws.
