French Colonization (1635-present)[edit | edit source]
French colonization in Martinique began in 1635 when the French governor and settlers of St. Kitts were driven off by the British. During the 18th century and early 19th century, the British took brief control of Martinique. Martinique is currently one of the Overseas Departments of France.[1]
