County Information

Description

Mariposa County was created 18 Feb 1850[1] and was named for Mariposa Creek, which was named by Spanish explorers in 1806, when they discovered great clusters of butterflies ("mariposas" in Spanish) in the foothills of the Sierras.[2] Its county seat is Mariposa. It is located in the central area of the state.[3]
