Maldives Emigration and Immigration
"Emigration" means moving out of a country. "Immigration" means moving into a country.
Emigration and immigration sources list the names of people leaving (emigrating) or arriving (immigrating) in the country. These sources may be passenger lists, permissions to emigrate, or records of passports issued. The information in these records may include the emigrants’ names, ages, occupations, destinations, and places of origin or birthplaces. Sometimes they also show family groups.
Immigration into Maldives
- In the 12th century Islam reached the Maldivian Archipelago, which was consolidated as a sultanate, developing strong commercial and cultural ties with Asia and Africa.
- From the mid-16th-century the region came under the increasing influence of European colonial powers, with Maldives becoming a British protectorate in 1887. In 1558, the Portuguese established a small garrison which they administered from their main colony in Goa. Fifteen years later Muslims drove the Portuguese out of Maldives.
- In the mid-17th century, the Dutch, who had replaced the Portuguese as the dominant power in Ceylon, established hegemony over Maldivian affairs'
- The British expelled the Dutch from Ceylon in 1796 and included Maldives as a British Protectorate.
- Independence from the United Kingdom came in 1965, and a presidential republic was established in 1968.[1]
