The collection includes various county records, most are military records. The collection is located at the Maine State Archives. The records cover the years 1718-1957. 'The index at present covers two military collections; the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors Card Index, 1861-1865 and World War I Card Index to Soldiers by Town, 1917-1919.

- Identifying information such as the date and place of the event

Compare each result from your search with what you know to determine if there is a match. This may require viewing multiple records or images. Keep track of your research in a research log.

I Found the Person I Was Looking For, What Now?
- Add any new information to your records
- Use the age to calculate a birth date
- Use the names, ages and residence church and census records
- Continue to search the index and records to identify children, siblings, parents, and other relatives who may have been in the same area
- When looking for a person who had a common name, look at all the entries for the name before deciding which is correct
I Can't Find the Person I'm Looking For, What Now?
- Look for variant spellings of the names. You should also look for nicknames and abbreviated names
- Look for an index. There are often indexes at the beginning of each volume. Local genealogical and historical societies often have indexes to local records
- Search the records of nearby localities
