The Lakota also live in the following areas:

  • Fort Peck Indian Reservation in northeastern Montana.
  • Fort Berthold Indian Reservation of northwestern North Dakota.
  • Several small reserves in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, Canada. During the Minnesota and Black Hills wars, their ancestors fled for refuge to Canada.

Lakota elders joined the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) for help to retain their rights.[2]
