Background
By the mid-19th century, Russia nominally ruled Kazakhstan and freed all of the slaves the Kazakhs captured in 1859. In 1936, it became the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic in the Soviet Union. In 1991, Kazakhstan declared independence from the Soviet Union.
