Brief Timeline

1601:Juan de Onate,has contact with the Kansa tribe

1825: The tribe cede land in Missouri to the United States, move to a reservation in Kansas

1846: Removed to a reservation at Council Grove on the Neosha River

1852: The Kansas tribe was living in northern part of Indian Territory which became Kansas and Nebraska, in 1852

1862: Homestead Act allowed white settlers to move into Kansas and Nebraska

1873: Removed to Oklahoma given land in northeast Oklahoma

Agencies

The Kansa Tribe in Kansas was under the jurisdiction of the Fort Leavenworth Agency,1824-47; Osage River Agency, 1847-51; Potawatomi Agency 1851-55 and the Kansas Agency, 1855-76. While in Kansas they were under the Central Superintendency.

The tribe in Oklahoma was under the jurisdiction of the Neosho Agency 1874; and the Osage Agency 1874-80.

The majority of records of individuals were those created by the agencies. Some records may be available to tribal members through the tribal headquarters.They were (and are) the local office of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and were charged with maintaining records of the activities of those under their responsibility.
