Civil Registration
Civil registration records kept by the former civil registration offices of Hamburg are now in the State Archive of Hamburg for the following time frames:
Births: 1874 formerly Prussian civil registration offices / 1876-1901
Marriages: 1874 formerly Prussian civil registration offices / 1876-1931
Deaths 1874 formerly Prussian civil registration offices /1876-1981

Address books
At the website of the Uni Hamburg all address and telephone books for Hamburg are being digitized. Further information can be found here
Citizens' registers
- For the years 1892-1925 the registration cards for those who died or moved from Hamburg are available.
- Further cards were destroyed in 1943.
- For the time frame 1943-1945 an alphabatical register is available as microfilm in the archive.
- For data after 1945 the state archive can merely give information because of privacy laws.
- A house register is available for 1939-1968, however, privacy laws apply here as well.

Civil Registration from 1866 to 1875
Records of cities annexed to Hamburg in 1937 from Prussia (Altona, Harburg, Wandsbek) and parishes are in their books. This is also true for the Evangelical-Lutheran parishes of the Alt-Hamburg area from before 1865.
Records can be found in the appropriate Kirchenkreis of the Nordelbische Landeskirche.

Emigration
Emigration lists are available for the years 1850-1934 on microfilm. Online data is available for the years 1877 to 1914 at [1]

Church and State Archives
Copies and even originals of some church records are deposited in various archives. Although some general descriptions of which records are in which archives are given here, you can and should e-mail the archive to make certain they have the records you want.
The Family Search page of the State Archives gives this explanation of which church records it holds and where to find those it does not. Notice that there are two different groups within the protestant/Evangelical/Lutheran church.
A. The Staatsarchiv Hamburg houses the church books of the Protestant-Lutheran church communities in Hamburg before 1866 and the Reformed communities before 1884, the church books of the Mennonite community, and the Jewish communities.
