Background[edit | edit source]
- Colonial Era (1697-1804): Early censuses in Haiti were conducted during the French colonial period, primarily for administrative and taxation purposes. These censuses often provided limited demographic information. The first comprehensive census was conducted in 1788, during French rule. This census provided valuable information about the population demographics of the colony, including the distribution of slaves, free people of color, and white inhabitants.
- Independence and Early Republic: Following Haiti's independence in 1804, the new government continued the practice of censuses. However, due to political instability, economic challenges, and limited resources, the frequency and accuracy of these censuses varied over time.
- 20th-21st Centuries: The 20th century saw a more systematic approach to censuses in Haiti. The government, often with international assistance, conducted several censuses to gather data on population distribution, demographics, and economic conditions. Notable censuses took place in 1950, 1971, 1982, and 2003. These censuses have not been made available.
