- Archives collect and preserve original documents of organizations such as churches or governments. Libraries generally collect published sources such as books, maps, and microfilm.
- If you plan to visit a repository, contact them and ask for information about their collection, hours, services, and fees. Ask if they require you to have a reader’s ticket (a paper indicating you are a responsible researcher) to view the records, and ask how to obtain one.
- Although the records you need may be in an archive or library, the FamilySearch Library may have microfilmed and/or digitized copies of them.

- "INEP (Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisa) is the only public Bissau-Guinean research institution. It was founded in 1984, in order to promote studies and research, mainly in social sciences, economy, anthropology, modern history, environmental studies and applied technologies. The research programs are clearly related to developmental issues. INEP has the mission to preserve and to produce knowledge about Guinea-Bissau. It especially devotes assistance to the development of human resources. The main activity of INEP is basic and applied research and publication of studies relating to Guinea Bissau. The staff consists of permanent researchers and a network of scholars both domestic and foreign. Its academic activities include conferences and seminars aimed at disseminating results of scientific research on Guinea Bissau. Within a relatively short time frame INEP has built up an internationally accepted academic institution for West African studies in general and research on Guinea-Bissau in particular. International academic cooperation plays a key role for scientific knowledge production in and about Guinea-Bissau which is focused at INEP. [1]

- "The INEP Library, with around 70,000 volumes, is the only large public library in the country. It is the only site in Guinea-Bissau that has quite considerable collections in all scientific fields (general knowledge for students and the general public) and scientific publications (books, magazines, official bulletins, etc.) about Guinea-Bissau from colonial times to today. The library also contains a large number of unpublished reports on various topics related to the country's development, originating from consultations carried out by INEP and other international organizations and organizations (a total of around 10,000 volumes).
- "The Library inherited the entire fund of the former colonial library in Portuguese Guinea....Due to its geographic situation, sharing the same space with the Amílcar Cabral University, the Faculty of Law of Bissau and the School of Medicine, and also, an important support for the University Colinas de Boé, the Library has been serving students from all over the School Complex that houses these university institutions, making it a center for promoting public reading.
