Background[edit | edit source]

During the Middle Ages, land ownership was concentrated in the hands of the nobility and the Church, with peasants holding land under various forms of tenancy. In the 16th century, the Swedish Crown introduced a system of hereditary landownership, which granted peasants the right to own and inherit their land. However, this system was not fully implemented until the 19th century, when a series of land reforms abolished the remaining forms of serfdom and tenancy.

The early 20th century saw further changes in land ownership practices, with the Agrarian Reform of 1918 leading to the redistribution of large estates and the creation of small family farms. This reform played a crucial role in shaping Finland's agricultural landscape and promoting rural development. In the post-war era, Finland's land ownership system has remained relatively stable, with a high proportion of land owned by individual farmers and a smaller share owned by corporations and the state. However, recent decades have witnessed a gradual consolidation of land ownership, as some farms have grown larger and others have been abandoned.[1][2][3][4][5]
