Scope

I did not realize that the Community Council's scope was to alter the navboxes nationwide in England. From the message I received, I understood that it was limited to a decision about Suffolk. If discussions are beginning on creating standardised navboxes nationwide, we definitely need to have a meeting so I can explain how I use these boxes and how they best perform. Hi Nathan, yes although this topic came up from a Suffolk perspective, we think the discussion needs to take in a wider application. I would be interested to hear/understand the importance of having the parish links in the county Navbox. --Steve (talk| contribs) 18:24, 24 January 2014 (UTC)

Thanks Steve. I'm sure you all think I'm crazy :) I look forward to explaining the rationale of listing parishes in "temporary" navboxes. I think it would be easiest to demonstrate by sharing my screen in a meeting. Murphynw 23:33, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

 Second proposal - 2

This must be a preliminary idea of how to use the navboxes. On the Suffolk pages I have inserted it right into the Civil registration section Bedfield, Suffolk. There is no need to link to topics since they are already incorporated into the parish page. Then I have a link to the Suffolk Civil Registration page. Then I have a link to the Hoxne Hundred, Suffolk of which I could have called the Hoxne Deanery or Hoxne hundred or Deanry page. Donjgen 07:33, 23 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi Don, this is certainly a proposal that we can discuss and change as we understand all the issues in play. I like the Parishes in the Hundred and District of.. navbox you have created. I notice that you have coded this directly in the parish page. Did you consider creating them as templates? The purpose of navboxes is to group together related links. So even though the topic links will be in the body of the article, they are also useful if repeated in a navbox at the end of the main article. --Steve (talk| contribs) 18:29, 24 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi Steve I don't think I have progressed far enough into the process to establish template navboxes for the districts. There would be twenty different navboxes as there are 20 registration districts in Suffolk. Hoxne Hundred, Suffolk is the only page developed, 19 more pages need be developed. Hundreds and Boroughs of Suffolk. The relationship of the hundreds, districts, and deanery's need to be sorted out and how to integrate them and name the pages. I do think that the links to the parishes in district would be more suite in the Civil Registration section. I have altered the {{template:Suffolk]] and removed all the parishes. Some more thought will have to go into how that template will evolve. Donjgen 15:07, 26 January 2014 (UTC)

Don's concern is valid. If all of England's parishes are to be grouped in hundreds, and it's too taxing on Don's time to complete this task for a single county, who is going to do this legwork for the remainder of the counties? Murphynw 23:33, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

Here are two examples of FSWiki navboxes in the USA for large jurisdictions (which is what I've attempted to imitate for the UK): (1) https://familysearch.org/wiki/en/Template:Virginia (2) https://familysearch.org/wiki/en/Template:Texas

Its going to take time to develop the pages. It is much more useful to have links to nearby parishes rather than every parish in the whole county. There is already a link on every parish page to a list of all the parishes in the county.
Concerning Suffolk I am going to rename Hundreds and Boroughs of Suffolk to **Jurisdictions of Suffolk**, so I can point out the relationship between the ecclesiastical and civil jurisdictions. Donjgen 02:54, 3 February 2014 (UTC)
