FamilySearch Wiki:Wiki Project Finland Parish List

Purpose

There is a list of all the parishes in Finland, but the list does not currently link to each individual parish page. This project will include adding an internal link to each parish page for Finland.

Instructions

Sign up on Task List

1. Add your name to the section of the Task List above that you'd like to work on.

2. Go to the Finnish Parish List, and navigate to the letter of the alphabet that you signed up for in step 1.

3. Click "Edit source" next to the heading of your letter of the alphabet.

Locate Parish Page

4. Locate the name of the first parish in that list. The parish name can be found at the beginning of a new row, before the first pair of pipes (||). See below for examples of where the parish name is on the page.

  • Note: If your parish includes (see _____) in parentheses, the parish name you will be using for steps 5-8 is the name within the parentheses.

5. Copy and paste the following code directly in front of the name of the parish.

[[ARTICLETITLE|

6. Copy and paste the following code directly after the name of the parish.

]]
  • Note: this code creates an "internal link", and will link to an article within the FamilySearch Wiki. ARTICLETITLE will be the title of the Wiki article it will link to.

7. After following steps 5-6, your code should be in the following format (see the image below for two examples).

Article title code Finland.PNG

8. In a new tab or window in your browser, open the FS Wiki and do a search for the parish name.

  • Note: If your parish name has a (see _____) in the name, such as "Ackas (see Akaa)" in the image above, conduct your search for the name within the parentheses. For example, you would search for "Akaa".

If you search in the top right-hand corner search bar on the FS Wiki, typically the drop-down search feature will suggest existing article titles that match your search. See the image below for an example searching for "Akaa".

9. When you search for the parish name, you should find an option for a Wiki page of that parish in Finland. It should be a page titled in the format of, "Parish name, Province, Finland Genealogy."

  • Note: One way to help you know if you have the correct parish (especially if there is more than one Finland parish with that same name), check your parish's listed "Old Province" on the Finnish Parish List. That "Old Province" should correspond with the Province in the page title. This should help distinguish which page title you are looking for in the search results.

Insert Link to Correct Parish Page

10. On the parish page, copy the name of the parish page. (The page name is shown highlighted in yellow below)

11. Back on the Finnish Parish List page, locate the name of the parish you are currently working on.

12. Replace the "ARTICLETITLE" in the code with the full title of the Wiki page you just copied on step 10 (examples of a regular entry as well as a (see ______) entry below).

13. Repeat again starting at step 4 until you finish the letter(s) of the alphabet you signed up for in this parish list.

  • Note: I would recommend going through abt 10 parishes, and clicking "Show preview", just to check and make sure everything looks good before you save. If you see a red link or some broken code, you'll know that a mistake was made, and it will be easier to fix from here on out instead of making the same errors on the entire section. If you see a mistake, go back to the code you entered, and compare all the components of the code with the instructions to make sure you added everything correctly.

14. If you encounter a parish name in the list that you can't find a corresponding Wiki page for, just skip it and move on to the next one in the parish list.
