Swedish Church Images and Parish Pages

Project Leader[edit | edit source]

Purpose[edit | edit source]

To enrich the parish pages for Sweden by locating pictures of the parish churches.
A researcher may go to a Swedish parish page looking for websites, place names, jurisdictional information, or databases, but these tools alone are simply text on a page. The purpose of adding pictures to the parish pages is to enrich the research experience by giving a visual glimpse of the ancestor’s life. Its fun and exciting to see a place where you know the ancestor visited often.

Task List[edit | edit source]

Instructions[edit | edit source]

Step 1 - Locate Church Photo[edit | edit source]

1. Sign up for your desired set of churches on the task list.

2. Click on the link in the Diocese/Stift column for your span of churches. It will take you to a list of Sweden parishes/churches on WikiCommons. When on the WikiCommons site, click on the first link within your span of churches. (An example parish is shown below)

3. After you have clicked on the link to a church, click on the photo that you think gives the best view of the outside of the church building (preferably in color if available). Ideally, we are looking for a photo that shows as much of the building as possible.

  • NOTE: If no photos show the outside of the church building, you can just skip that church.

6. Open this Google sheet and paste the URL into the WikiCommons Image URL column.

Step 2 - Find the FS Wiki Parish Page[edit | edit source]

This step will involve locating the Wiki parish pages that match the churches you found.

7. In the Task List, under the column called Corresponding Swedish Counties, you will find the counties that belonged to the diocese you are working on.

8. Right click on the link to the county/counties, and click "Open link in new tab". This will keep the Task List open in your browser, but will open the county page in a new tab.

9. Browse through the list of parishes belonging to that county to see if you can find one that corresponds to the name of the church. Often the church name will include the parish name. (Make sure if the parish name starts with an Å, Ø, or Æ, that you check the end of the alphabet for those parishes).

  • Example: Ängelholms kyrka (part of Lund diocese) in the example above corresponds to Ängelholm Garnisonsförsamlingen Parish in Kristianstad County. See the first entry in the Google sheet.

10. If the corresponding Wiki parish page is NOT found in the county/counties provided in the Task List, simply write "Unknown" in the FS Wiki Parish Page column in the Google sheet.

11. If you have any comments or concerns about a particular church/parish, write it in the Notes/Questions column of the Google sheet.
