Instructions For U.S. State Topic pages[edit | edit source]
1. Sign up for a span of states on the Task List to update the breadcrumb by going to the Task List
2. Use the instructions from Instructions For U.S. County Pages above to add the breadcrumb template and add the correct links to the template.
SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS FOR U.S. STATE TOPIC PAGES:
- NOTE: Breadcrumbs already on the state topic pages are very inconsistent and some are just wrong. Please watch closely to make sure you put the right breadcrumb on the state topic page.
- Sidebar Template:Make sure the sidebar template is first on the page, with the breadcrumb directly after it. (This helps the sidebar go to the very top of the page). See example below.
- The breadcrumb should never include the word Genealogy on the page. If the old breadcrumb lists "genealogy" change the link so that just the locality appears in the breadcrumb. For example you would change the old link, [[United States Genealogy]] to [[United States Genealogy|United States]]
- For state topic pages, you should never list "North America" as the first breadcrumb. It should start with United States.
- Adoptions - almost all U.S. sidebars either link to: 1) the United States Adoption page or, 2) a heading section of the state's vital records page. DO NOT PUT A BREADCRUMB ON THESE PAGES.
- State topic pages should have the links:
- United States
- The U.S. link to that topic page, such as U.S. Obituaries (always abbreviator the U.S. before the topic word)
- State
- Topic page (you do not need to repeat the name of the state again)
