FamilySearch Wiki:WikiProject Restructure France Department Pages
Purpose
Now that we have standardized formats for locality pages in the Wiki, we need to start resructuring the existing sublocality/jurisdiction pages to align with the new standards.

Task List
Instructions
1. Open the Task List and add your name to the "Name" column for the Department you're going to work on.
2. Create a new sandbox page for that department. Add a link to that sandbox page to the Task List in the "Sandbox Page" column.
3. Copy and Paste the following outline into your sandbox you created.

4. In "Edit source" on the Wiki France department page, replace the following pieces of information in all CAPS:
- PAGENAME = full name of the department page on the Wiki
- DEPARTMENTNAME = the name of the department
- IMAGELINKHERE = if there is an image, add the full internal link code here, from the beginning [[ to the end ]]
- ADDHISTORYHERE = any history content from the department page goes here
- LISTCOMMUNESHERE = any commune/locality resources or list of communes are to be listed here
- COUSINSLINKHERE = if there is a link on the page for the department's "Cousins" project on FranceGenWeb, add the link here. An example of a "Cousins" project link is shown below:
*[http://www.francegenweb.org/sitescgw/c2/index.php?dept=02 Cousins 02, Aisne]
- Otherwise, if there is no cousins link, remove the entire entry under Societies
- CATGORYHERE = add the full category from the Department page here
Add Links
5. Review all database links under the "Church Records" and "Civil Registration headings", and add them to the corresponding headings in your sandbox according to the Manual of Style
- Note: You don't need to add any other information (such as commentary on the usefulness of records or how to find the records) over to these headings other than the database links.
- Note: When adding database links to the headings on your Sandbox, be sure to list them in chronological order, with databases with a year span listed at the top, and those without a specific year span underneath. Keep any *See [[France Church Records]] for more information. links at the bottom of the list of databases.
6. Look for a link on the Department FS Wiki page that looks similar to the following (likely with a different number at the very end of the URL) - use Ctrl + F for this if needed:
https://www.francegenweb.org/indexall.php?dept=01
7. That link should take you to the FranceGenWeb with a big colorful map of France on it. On the right-hand side should be a list of links. Look for all the links that begin with "Base:". Those should link to databases/indexes.
- Note: Be sure you are looking at the resources for the right Department. Each Department has an associated number (found in the Task List) - see the yellow highlighted area in the image below.
8. Assess each link, and if it does link to indexed (or images of) records, add a link to that database to a corresponding record type heading on your sandbox under "Resources".
- Note: If the small index/database has a French title, keep the title of the link in French when you add the database link to your Sandbox page.
- Note: If using Google Chrome, right-click on the page and click "Translate to English" to get a rough English translation of different French pages.
- If some content on the French-language page is in an image (or other format) that won't let you translate it using Chrome's Translate feature, you may want to open Google Translate and manually type in some of the text to get a sense of what it is communicating.
- Note: You may have to create a new record type heading. See Admin Level 1 Layout for a list of approved "Resources" subheadings.
9. Using Ctrl + F if needed, look for a link on the Department Wiki page that looks similar to the following (replacing "Ain" with the name of the Department) - you'll be looking for a FranceGenWeb link with the word "Portail" in it:
http://www.francegenweb.org/wiki/index.php?title=Portail:Ain
10. That link should take you to another wiki's portal page for that Department. The "links" on this portal page look different because the URLs aren't clickable, and they appear to display like external link wikitext code.
- Examples shown in yellow below indicate a couple possible databases, under the French "Bases et relevés en ligne" ("Online surveys and bases").
11. Copy and paste each link (such as the ones in yellow above) into another tab on your browser and assess whether that link goes to a database of records, and what kind of records it leads to.
- Note: Often these links will go to a small or incomplete index of various records.
- Note: Some of these indexes overlap with the ones you pulled from the link from Step 7, but gather any bonus links and add them to the corresponding headings on your sandbox page.
Societies/Archives
12. If there is any content on the FS Wiki department page for specific societies or archives that you haven't already listed in other Resources headings (such as the example below for Aisne Department), add the information over to the Archives or Societies heading on your Sandbox page.
- Note: If there is a large list of links to groups/societies, such as in the image below, don't spend your time formatting each one individually according to the Manual of Style. Some, like the list below, may take way too long. We can have a separate project to go back in and reformat those later.
13. Once you've tackled all the record/database links and any society/archive information from the original department Wiki page and have formatted them according to the Manual of Style on your Sandbox page, Save the page and add a link to your sandbox page to the task list.
