FamilySearch Wiki:WikiProject Resizing Images in Templates
Purpose
To reduce the size of images resulting from the recent upgrade of Mediawiki software.

Instructions
Go to the Task List and sign out a group of counties in a state to work on.
1. Go to the first county on your list and click on the edit source tab so you can see the page in wikitext.
2. Review the page to see if there is an oversized picture on the page. You will know it's oversized by it taking up most of the screen.
3. Review the wiki text to locate the image template on the county page. These templates were created when captioning was not working on the wiki.
- An example of the text you are looking for is:
- [[Image:{{WALincolnPatchwork}}]].
- [[Image:{{WALincolnPatchwork}}]].
4. Once you find the image template, click here to open a new tab of the wiki.
5. Type in the search field in the top right hand corner, "Template:" then paste the name of the template directly afterwards and make a search.
- Example:
- Template:WALincolnPatchwork
- Template:WALincolnPatchwork
6. When you find the template, copy the text on the page regarding the picture. DO NOT USE WIKITEXT. Just copy what is on the page.
- An example is:
- Wilbur, Washington aerial 01A.jpg |frame|right|235x195px|A Patchwork Aerial View of Wilbur, Lincoln County, Washington.

7. Go back to the county page and remove the template from the page and replace it with what you just copied.
8. Once it has been pasted, format the content by:
- a. Adding "[[Image:" directly in front of the line
- b. Adding a closing "]]" at the end of the line
- c. Replacing the word "frame" with "thumb"
- d. Add "<center>" just before the caption after the pipe
- e. Add "</center>" just after the caption and before the first square bracket
- An example of a completed entry is:

- [[Image:Wilbur, Washington aerial 01A.jpg|thumb|right|235x195px|<center>A Patchwork Aerial View of Wilbur, Lincoln County, Washington</center>]]
9. Change the size of the picture by taking out whatever is behind the first number and letter x. For the above example, you would remove "x195".
- The wikitext should now say:
- [[Image:Wilbur, Washington aerial 01A.jpg|thumb|right|235|<center>A Patchwork Aerial View of Wilbur, Lincoln County, Washington</center>]]
- [[Image:Wilbur, Washington aerial 01A.jpg|thumb|right|235|<center>A Patchwork Aerial View of Wilbur, Lincoln County, Washington</center>]]
Note: making an image a thumbnail often shrinks the image smaller than usual. You may want to increase the size of the image by 100 or 200 px to make the image easier to be seen. For example, if it is a 250px, you may need to make it a 350px. Use your best judgment.
10. Preview the page to make sure the image resizes to a small version by clicking on the "show preview" button at the bottom of the page.
11. Make any adjustments as necessary. If it previews correct, type in "fixed image" in the summary field and click on "save page."
12. Return to the tab with the Template in wiki and click on "edit source."
13. Add the following template at the top of the page: {{Delete}}
14. Go to the Summary field and type in "added delete template" and Click on "Save page."
15. You have completed the task and you can now go to the next county. When you have finished your counties, go back to the Task List and indicate the date you completed your work.
