Wiki Project New York Tasks - Repositories: Societies

The purpose of this task is to find the genealogical and historical societies located in a county and list their contact information, website, collections and databases for family history research.
Instructions[edit | edit source]
1. While in wiki text, add the following sentence under the heading Societies
Rich in history, {{PAGENAME}} contains a number of societies dealing with the history of the area.
2. To locate societies in a county, search the following websites:

- Epodunk Browse appropriate county profile for historical societies
- Google "Genealogical Society [county name and state]" or "Historical Society [county name and state]"
- Google "[county name and state] genealogy blog" then scan for mention of any societies for that county
3. For each county society you find, add the following:
- Name of the society. If the society has a website, add the link to the name of the society. See the example below. If there is no website link, bold the name of the society.
- Address
- phone number
- email
4. Add one or two sentences that discuss the strengths and peculiarities of the databases or collections of the society. Be sure to include information regarding a periodical or newsletter for the society.
5.You may also wish to include the following:
- Rules for using the collection
- Copy policies
- Research help
- Cost of entrance
6. If you copy a link and add it to the county page, make sure the link works. Do not add any broken links.
7. If you locate a town or township society, you may add the information to the this page following county society information.
8. You do not need to add state level societies to county or town pages.

Rich in history, Berks County contains a number of societies dealing with the history of the area.
The Historical Society of the Berks County is located on Centre Street in Reading. There are varying degrees of membership ranging from a $40.00 yearly single membership to a $1,000.00 yearly patron membership. There is also a youth membership, ages 8-15, for $17.76.

Archives[edit | edit source]
The York County Archives is a department of the York County Government.
The Archives was established in 1987 and moved to its current location in 1995. To accommodate the growing number of records, the Archives building was expanded in 2001.
York County's records begin in August of 1749 when York County was formed from Lancaster County. The Archives stores records for over 40 different county offices during various time periods throughout the past 250 years.

FamilySearch Centers[edit | edit source]
FamilySearch Centers (FSCs) are branches of the FamilySearch Library in Salt Lake City, Utah, and are located all over the world. Their goal is to provide resources for family history research.

Museums[edit | edit source]
York Heritage Trust, 250 East Market Street, York, Pennsylvania, (formerly York County Historical Society). From quilts to tiny photographs, the Historical Society Museum and Library houses both exhibits and an extensive research library. The Heritage Trust's Library and Archives houses an extensive and varied collection covering a wide range of topics including genealogy and family history, local history, the decorative arts and military history.
