Wiki Project Pennsylvania Tasks - Naturalization 4

Description[edit | edit source]

The purpose of this task is to add an ending template to the Naturalization and Citizenship heading on the county page.

Instructions[edit | edit source]

1. Before you open your county page for editing, go to the new FS Catalog on FamilySearch, determine if your county has any records under the county's "Naturalization and Citizenship" topic.

2. If your county does have "Naturalization and Citizenship" in the FS Catalog, follow steps 3–5. If yours DOES NOT have "Naturalization and Citizenship" BUT it has "Naturalization and Citizenship - Indexes" instead use this as the topic and do steps 3-5. If the county does not have "Naturalization and Citizenship - Indexes" listed either, skip down to step 6.

3. Copy the following template and paste it in wikitext at the end of the Naturalization section and just before the Newspaper Heading:

4. In the template, replace "Berks" with the name of the county you are working on.

5. In the template, change the number 1 listed with the number you obtain from finding the subject number for the FS Catalog topic in your county, "Naturalization and citizenship" (use Naturalization and Citizenship - Indexes" topic instead if the other topic does not exist for that county):

While in the new FS Catalog on FamilySearch, select any record under the county's "Naturalization and citizenship" topic.
a. Put your county into the search "For" field, i.e. Berks, Pennsylvania.
b. Click on the county name as it appears beneath what you are typing.
c. Select the Naturalization and citizenship topic from the list.
d. Select any record listed in the Naturalization and citizenship topic.
e. In the naturalization record, under the "Subjects" heading select the link called "Pennsylvania, (your county)– Naturalization and citizenship".
f. Click on this blue subject link (i.e. Pennsylvania, Berks - Naturalization and citizenship).
g. In the upper left corner you will find a heading titled "Search" containing the term Subject Number. Under that is the heading "For" with a number. Copy the subject number in the "For" field.
h. In the number 1 field in the template, paste the subject number.
i. Save the page and the task is complete.

NOTE: REMEMBER if there is no topic, "Naturalization and Citizenship" for the county, instead use, "Naturalization and Citizenship - Indexes". If neither topic is there, skip to #6 below.

6. If there is no Naturalization and Citizenship topics in the FS Catalog for your county, copy the following template and paste it in wikitext under the online naturalization databases and before the Newspaper heading:

7. In the template, replace the county Berks with the name of the county you are working on.

8. Save the page and your task is complete.

Naturalization and Citizenship[edit | edit source]

Naturalization records can contain information about immigration and nativity. Prior to 1906, it is rare to find the town of origin in naturalization records. See Pennsylvania Naturalization for more information about the types of records and availability.

Naturalizations granted at the county level were kept by the office of the Prothonotary. Naturalizations could also be granted on the Federal Court level.
