Task[edit | edit source]

Wiki Project Pennsylvania Tasks - Naturalization 3

Description[edit | edit source]

List naturalization records from the FS Catalog onto the county page.

Instructions[edit | edit source]

1. To locate naturalization records in the FS Catalog, do a place name search in the FS Catalog by typing in your county. If you need more instructions on how to search the FS Catalog, go to FamilySearch Catalog Place-name Search.

2. Once you have the correct county, look under the topic of "Naturalization and Citizenship." Review the entries for any original probate records. Do not put in naturalization book indexes or abstracts. We will link to these in another task. If there are no original naturalization records in the FS Catalog, you have completed the task.

3. If there are original naturalization records listed for your county, copy and paste the following after the last online naturalization record listed:

'''Original Naturalization Records on Microfilm'''<br>

4. From the FS Catalog, add each original naturalization record under the new heading you created in #3. Please remember the following as you create the entry:

i. Bullet each entry you make.
ii. Put the dates the records cover at the beginning of the entry after the bullet. Then list the title of the collection.
iii. The date should be bolded.
iv. You can put the index at the end of the entry (see example).
v. Put the sources in chronological order.
vi. Use the FS Catalog template to list the film number.

Example:

:*'''1798–1915''' Naturalization Papers {{FSC|242982|item|disp=FS Library film 1403247 (first of 15 films)}} - Index included: 1798-1915<br>

Naturalization and Citizenship[edit | edit source]

Naturalization records can contain information about immigration and nativity. Prior to 1906, it is rare to find the town of origin in naturalization records. See Pennsylvania Naturalization for more information about the types of records and availability.

Naturalizations granted at the county level were kept by the office of the Prothonotary. Naturalizations could also be granted on the Federal Court level.
