Wiki Project New York Tasks - Probate Records Intro
Description
The purpose of this task is add the intro template and the ending template to the Probate Records heading.

1. Under the Probate Heading add the following template:

2. At the end of the Probate records section (after the FS LibraryC entries under the heading, "Probate Records on Microfilm"), add the following template:
- {{NY FHLC Probate|1|2}}<br>
- {{NY FHLC Probate|1|2}}<br>
3. If needed, add the Surrogate Court to the County Courthouse page for your county. Use the following link to capture the Surrogate Court information.

4. Replace the number "1" in the template with the name of your county and the phrase "+County" between the pipes.
5. Replace the number "2" and add the FamilySearch Catalog (FS LibraryC) subject number. Find the subject number as follows:
- a. Do a place search of the FS LibraryC for your county.
- b. Select Land and Property from the record groups displayed.
- c. Select any record displayed.
- d. Select the highlighted phrase under the word "Subjects".
- e. Copy the number displayed in the upper right-hand corner in the display box "For". This is the subject number.
- f. Paste this number into the NYLand template where you see the number
- a. Do a place search of the FS LibraryC for your county.
7. Your new finished template should look something like this:

8. If any probate indexes already posted to your county, put them after the intro information (first template) and before Historical Records or Probate Records on Microfilm.
Example
Probate Records
Probate records including original estates and wills for New York are held in the office of the county Surrogate Court beginning in 1787, or when the county was formed. Prior to 1787, most are housed at the New York State Archives. See New York Probate Records for more information about using probate records.
Content: Probate Records may give the decedent's date of death, names of his or her spouse, children, parents, siblings, in-laws, neighbors, associates, relatives, and their place of residence.
Record types: Wills, bonds, petitions, accounts, inventories, administrations, orders, decrees, and distribution.

Original Clinton County probate records are available online at FamilySearch. To access these records, choose "browse through images". Then, choose your county name, and then the probate record of interest.
