Task List[edit | edit source]

Task List

Instructions[edit | edit source]

1. Go to the Task List and sign out a section of counties to work on.

2. Go do the Census heading on the first county.

Step 1 - Add heading and databases[edit | edit source]

3. Add the following heading and databases directly under the MT Census intro and before the Federal Census heading:

==== Territory and State Censuses ====
*'''1860''' - {{RecordSearch|1473181|United States Census, 1860}} at [https://familysearch.org/search/ FamilySearch Historical Records] — index & images; Montana was included in the 1860 Washington and Nebraska Territory Censuses
*'''1870''' - {{RecordSearch|1438024|United States Census, 1870}} at [https://familysearch.org/search/ FamilySearch Historical Records] — index & images; Montana Territory Census
*'''1880''' - {{RecordSearch|1417683|United States Census, 1880}} at [https://familysearch.org/search/ FamilySearch Historical Records] — index & images; Montana Territory Census

Step 2 - move census index[edit | edit source]

4. If there is an Census index listed for the county directly under the Census heading, move it below the Federal Census heading after the sentence. (See example below.) Not all counties have this link.

5. Preview the page to make sure the links and information look correct.

6. Add to the Summary field, "added census databases" and save the page.

7. Once you are finished with your counties, go back to the Task List and add the date you completed your section of counties.

Example[edit | edit source]

Census Records[edit | edit source]

Before Montana was a state in 1889, the western portion of Montana was included in the 1860 Washington Territory and the eastern was in the unorganized parts of 1860 Nebraska Territory. The 1870 and 1880 Federal Censuses included Montana Territory. No state censuses have been taken.[1] See links listed below.

Territory and State Censuses[edit | edit source]

Federal Census Records[edit | edit source]

Federal Censuses were taken for the state of North Dakota starting in 1890, although no records survived. The 1900 is the next Federal Census available. For links to Federal census indexes, see North Dakota Census.
