FamilySearch Wiki:WikiProject Kentucky Historical Population
Instructions
Step 1: Updating Historical Population Chart Code
1. We will be changing and updating the old USCensusPop template to Historical populations.
2. Go to the Census heading on the county page you signed up for and click on Edit Source.
3. You are going to replace template name with the new template name and 3 additional lines:
Replace:
{{USCensusPop
With:
{{Historical populations
|type = USA
|heading = Census
|footnote = Source: [http://zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz "Wikipedia.org".]
Step 2: Deleting unnecessary code
1. Go to the bottom of the code and delete the following wikitext code:
| estimate=
| estyear=
| estref=
| footnote=http://ukcc.uky.edu/~census/21053.txt
Step 3: Adding more Information
FYI: The first number on each line represents the census year (1800, 1810, 1820, etc). The "xxxx" represents the population number for that census (usually a 3-6 digit number WITHOUT commas). The percent of increase/decrease will be calculated automatically when the chart is embedded on the Wiki page.
1. Go to the bottom of the table and add the following wikitext directly after the information for the year 2000:
|2010 |xxxx
2. The data to add to this year can be obtained by going to the county on Wikipedia.
3. Once on the Wikipedia page, go to the heading, Demographics and find the population data for 2010 and copy the information into your chart on your sandbox wiki page.
The population numbers goes immediately after the second pipe, with no space.
Example:
|2010 |3791
Notes:
- You are only concerned with the population number, which is the middle column on the wikipedia table. The percentages will calculate automatically when you save your work.
- Not all tables will begin with the same year because some censuses were lost or the county was created later. Double check against the Wikipedia county page to make sure your table begins with the correct date.
Step 4: Change all equal signs to pipes for each Year
1. Starting with the first date on the table, change the equal sign (=) to a pipe (|).
NOTE: Do not change the equal signs anywhere else in the table. Only with the dates.
Step 5: Add URL for footnote
1. When you are finished, copy the URL from the Wikipedia county page and paste it into the "zzzzzzzz" section (4th line) on the template.
2. Preview the changes you made and make sure it looks correct.
3. Enter "updated census chart" in the edit summary box and save the page.
4. Once you have saved the page, go to the next county on your list.
