FamilySearch Wiki:WikiProject Ireland Law Libraries

From FamilySearch Wiki

Purpose[edit | edit source]

This project will consist of tracking down any Google Book links for Irish Law publications. This will help users refer to these records online instead on Google Books, if available, instead of trying to track down a hard copy of the publications.

Instructions[edit | edit source]

Searching for Publications[edit | edit source]

1. Click on "Reports Table" link above. This will take you to the Google Sheets page where you will be working.

2. Go to Google Books, and type in the name of the first title under the "Report" heading.

3. In the list of Google Books results for that publication, see if there is one that seems to match your "Reports" entry. Be aware: the Google Books title for that publication likely will not match to the title in the "Reports" column. The information in the "Reports" column often refers only to the author of the publication, or a small portion of the title. Using the "Publication Year" information can help narrow down possible matches in Google Books.

For example. In the Reports Table (Google Sheets file), the first entry is for Bridgman’s Digest (Equity). The publication year is 1828. As I search Google Books for this publication, I see results like the following.

Highlighted in the image above is the information that matches somewhat to the information from the Google Sheets, including the publication year and the author's name. In the Google Sheets, it also says that there are 3 volumes of this publication, and the top result indicates that it is volume 3. So this looks like a match for our publication.

4. If there is more than 1 volume for your publication, see if you can find each volume in the list of Google Books search results. This may take some digging, including investigating each entry and checking the title page to see if it lists which volume it is.

5. When you find the volume(s) on Google Books, copy the URL of the individual entry, and paste it in the column "Google Books Link" on the Google Sheets.

  • Note: for entries with more than one volume, put the URL for the first volume on the same row as the title of the publication. Any subsequent volumes, add a row for each one below the title of the publication, and add the links in the "Google Books Link" in order of volume number. For an example, see the Bridgman’s Digest (Equity) on the Google Sheets.

6. If you cannot find a match that publication on Google Books, try adjusting the search to include the year of publication, or the words "volume 1", etc.

7. If you still cannot find correct matches, just skip that one and move on to the next publication.
