Instructions[edit | edit source]
1. Go to the task list and sign up for wiki page to fix all the links on that page. There could be just one link, or several to fix on each page.
2. Once on the page, click on, Edit Source so you can review the wikitext code on the page. Click, Ctrl-F at the same time to quickly search the page. Type in: geonames and press enter to find the first broken link.
3. You will be fixing each link that has the word geonames and an FID number in it url. NOTE: if there is no FID number in it, it does not need to be fixed.
4. Copy the FID number from the URL currently on the page. This is the correct FID number.
5. Go to the GNIS website and paste the FID number into the "Feature ID" field. Press enter.
6. A result will appear for the ID number. Click on the feature name, such as, Chase Cemetery.
7. This is the actual page giving the GPS coordinates (longitude and latitude). Copy the URL.
8. Go back to the wiki page and replace the old link with this new link.
9. Fix any other GNIS links on the page using the Ctrl-F feature searching for geonames again.
10. Once you have fixed all the links on the page, preview the page to make sure the links all work.
11. In the Summary field, type in, Fixed GNIS link.
12. Go back to the task page and sign up for another wiki page.
