FamilySearch Wiki:WikiProject Fixing MA Town Links on County Pages
Purpose
The purpose of this project is to fix the Massachusetts Town Links on the County Pages, and add or update the Brief History section by adding the Wikipedia page link

Project Instructions
Project Overview
Part One
- Pick one County from the task list and put your name in all of the Towns there
- The first item to be fixed is updating or adding the Brief History section on the Town page
- Next add the Wikipedia Massachusetts Town page link to the Brief History section of each Town on the Task list
- Finish all of the Towns in the County on the Task List before going to Part Two
Part Two
- Fix Cities and Town links on the County page
Part One
Remember to finish all towns in the county before going on to Part Two
Step One
Open these two links:
- From the Massachusetts Task List, choose a Massachusetts County, then click on the first Town link to open the Town page
- For these instructions Barnstable, Barnstable County, Massachusetts was chosen
- From the Massachusetts, United States Genealogy link, open up the State page
Step Two
- On the Massachusetts State page, scroll down to the Massachusetts Clickable Map and click on the County that goes with the Town you chose
- For these instructions Barnstable County was clicked on
- On the County page click on 1.6 Populated Places to get to the List of Cities and Towns
Step Three
- Click on Barnstable in the Cities section
- This will take you to the Wikipedia page for Barnstable
- This page has all the information you will need to make the Wikipedia link
- From the Task List Barnstable Town page that was opened, at the top of the Contents section, there should be a Brief History section
- If there is not a Brief History section then one needs to be added
Step Four
- Steps to adding the Brief History section
- At the top of the Town page click on Edit Source
- Copy and paste this WikiText below
- Add === Brief History === after the the Map section and before the Town Section

- Save the page in the Summary with

Step Five
- Steps to adding the Wikipedia link to the Massachusetts Town page
- Go to the Brief History section and click on Edit Source
- Copy and paste this WikiText below right after the Brief History section
*[URL NAME OF PAGE] at Wikipedia
- From the Wikipedia page copy the URL and paste it where the URL is in the WikiText that is above
- Then copy the name of the page and paste it after the URL
- This is what the Wikipedia Link should look like on the Town page in the Brief History section:
- Please do not copy
*[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnstable,_Massachusetts Barnstable, Massachusetts] at Wikipedia
- This is an example of what the WikiText looks like before saving the edit
- Make sure there is a space between the URL and Name of Page
- Saving the edit
- Copy and paste this in the Summary

Step Six
- Please finish all of the Brief Histories for each Town before going on to Part Two
- Keep these two links open:
Part Two
- Fixing the Massachusetts Cities and Town Links on the County Page
- This image is an example of the wrong links for the Cities and Towns
- Notice a box and arrow after each of the Cities or Towns
- These links need to be changed from the Wikipedia page to the Cities or Town WIKI page
- This image shows the right link for Barnstable City and goes to the Barnstable, Barnstable County, Massachusetts Genealogy page
Step One
- Fixing the links
- On the Massachusetts State page scroll down to the clickable map and choose a County
- Barnstable County was chosen
- Click on Edit Source by Populated Places and keep this open
- All of the links for the Cities and Towns need to be fixed which have the Wikipedia link
- Copy and Paste the WikiText below over the Wikipedia link for the Town

- From the Massachusetts Task List click on the Town you want to fix
- Copy and Paste the name of the Town page into the WikiText
*[[Barnstable, Barnstable County, Massachusetts Genealogy|TOWN]]
- Next copy the name of the city or town and paste it over TOWN part
- Please do not copy
*[[Barnstable, Barnstable County, Massachusetts Genealogy|Barnstable]]
- This is what the Town Link should look like on the County page:
- Notice there is no box or arrow
Step Two
- Keep this Edit Source page open on the County page, Populated Places
- From the Task List click on each Town to get the Page Name
- Keep going down the Cities and Town links that have the Wikipedia link in them and replace
Step Three
- Once all of the Cities and Towns are fixed, save the page with:
Project/*Populated Places*/ Fixing Cities and Town links
- Once finished with the County go to the next County on the Task List
- Start over with Part One in adding the Wikipedia link to the Brief Histories on the Town page
