Fixing Images

Purpose[edit | edit source]

After the upgrade last year, thousands of images have been moved underneath the new sidebars. The purpose of the project is to move all the images on wiki pages to the top by the Table of Contents or any where else that is appropriate.

Task List[edit | edit source]

Instructions[edit | edit source]

Step 1 - Adding table[edit | edit source]

1. Go to the Task List and sign up for a span of wiki pages to fix.

2, Go to the first page on the list. Review the page to see if there is an image that is out of place. We are fixing the ones that have moved underneath the right sidebar.

3. If you find an image or images that needs to be fixed choose the appropriate template to fix the page. The first one is for one image. The second one is for two images.

4. Choose a table. Copy the following template:

Wikitext code for one image

style="padding-right:0px"|
PUT IMAGE OR TEMPLATE CODE HERE

Wikitext code for two images - side by side in columns

style="padding-right:0px"|
PUT IMAGE OR TEMPLATE CODE HERE
PUT IMAGE OR TEMPLATE CODE HERE

5. Placement of table. If you think the image would look best just right of the table of contents, place one of the above tables above the content on the page but after the sidebar and breadcrumb. If the page does not start with headings, you may have to adjust where you put the table. Be creative and preview the page. If you find a page that is just not working, contact Danielle or Charles and we'll help you situate the picture.

6. Adding the image wikitext code. Find the image wikitext code on the page and replace PUT IMAGE OR TEMPLATE CODE HERE with the complete code.

Example of table with image in it:

style="padding-right:0px"|

7. Centering the image. Adjust the margin-right amount of px in the very first line of the table to make it look appropriate on the page. Centering the images usually looks good but do what you think looks best. For example: {| style="float:right; margin-right:200px" can be adjusted to {| style="float:right; margin-right:250px" to make the amount of space from the right sidebar larger and to make it more centered. It has been defaulted at 200px but is by no means the perfect number for all images.

8. Changing the size of the image. If you feel the image would look better larger or smaller, do so by changing the px in the image wikitext code. An example of the code is: |350x250px|. To change the size adjust the numbers up or down. If there are two numbers given, move the numbers up and down porportionally. If you want to make this image large, try adding 50 to both numbers: 400x300px. If it only has one number, just adjust it up or down as needed.

Step 2 - Adding a caption to the image[edit | edit source]

9. We now have the ability to add captions to images. If there is a good enough description of the image in the title of the image, then consider adding a caption. This is not required if you feel it is not necessary or you do not know for sure what the image is of.

10. Adding thumb to image code. Captions are only shown on wiki pages when the image includes the tag, "thumb" in the image wikitext code. The code is: |thumb|. Place it anywhere in the wikitext code. It can be before or after the size of the image.

11. Adding the caption. Place the caption (or replace the caption already listed) at the end of the line just before the last double square brackets. For example:

12. Centering the caption. To make the caption centered under the picture, add the wiki text code of <center> before the caption and </center> after the caption. For example:

13. Now preview the image on the page to see if it looks correct.

14. If it works, put in the Summary field, Fixed image and save the page.

15. If the page looks just fine the way it is (maybe someone has already fixed it), move on to the next page.
