Purpose

To update/standardize the cemeteries pages for each country, especially those countries without much content in the Wiki. This will help those in underserved countries know where to access cemetery information.

You will be updating and creating pages for the countries on the Emerging Homelands and Caribbean 2021 tab.

Project Instructions for Countries Other than the United States and Canada

Part 1: Set up your sandbox

1: Go to the task list and choose a country from the Emerging Homelands tab. Please finish all countries on the Emerging Homelands tab before moving on to the Maturing Homelands Tab. Put your name under 'date completed' to claim it.

2: Create a sandbox for this page.

3: Copy and paste the following code into your sandbox If there is an existing page, please check the resources there and keep where appropriate.

Part 2: Evaluate Information on the Wiki Page for Your Country

1. Go to your country's cemeteries page in the Wiki and check existing county page for information to move over to the new page by clicking on each link.

2. Anything that is a bad link can be skipped. Bad links include those that are broken or do not have cemetery information.

3. All remaining links that still work and contain cemetery information can be used on the new page. They can be placed under the appropriate heading in your sandbox.

4. Please place all links below what is already in your sandbox, with a bullet point, the link and any explanation following. See the example below:

Part 3: Gather Additional Resources

Gather and add additional resources using the sites listed below with instructions for each one.

Check Find A Grave

1. Go to Find A Grave.

2. Type in the name of the country in the cemetery location search box and click search.

3. Copy the URL.

4. Go back to your sandbox and find the heading "Online Resources." Look below the heading where it says:

5. Highlight URL and paste the link you copied in place of URL. Make sure that there is a space and then the name of the link (Find A Grave) in between the open and close brackets.

Check BillionGraves

1. Go to BillionGraves.

2. Click the blue button that says "Search BillionGraves" at the upper right of the page.

3. Go to the heading that says "Where".

4. Select your country from the country pulldown menu.

5. Click the orange search button.

6. Copy the URL.

7. Go back to your sandbox and find the heading "List of Cemeteries in the County" Look below the heading where it says:

8. Highlight "URL" and paste the link you copied in its place.Make sure that there is a space and then the name of the link (BillionGraves) in between the open and close brackets.

Add Link for FamilySearch Places

1. Go to FamilySearch Places

2. Type the name of your country in the search box.

3. Select the top search result.

4. Click the blue target-shaped icon next to county name.

5. Click the link that says "add filter".

6. Type cemetery into the "place type" search box and select cemetery.

7. Copy the URL.

8. Go back to your sandbox and find the heading "Online Resources." Look below the heading where it says:

5. Highlight URL and paste the link you copied in place of URL. Make sure that there is a space and then the name of the link (FamilySearch Places) in between the open and close brackets.

6. Click show preview and double-check your work.

7. Click save.

Google

1. Do a Google search for cemeteries in your country to find additional online resources. You may need to use a genealogical word list to find the word in that language for cemetery and search using it to find them. For example, the word for cemetery in French is cimetière. You might search for France cimetière.

2. Place links beneath the appropriate heading with a bullet point.

Instructions for Jewish Cemeteries

1. Use Google search with the country name followed by Jewish Cemeteries.

Instructions for Military Cemeteries

1. Go to the Commonwealth of War Grave Commission.

2. Type in the name of your country in the search box.

3. Click each search result and add the link to your sandbox under the heading "Military Cemeteries" with a bullet point.

4. Use Google search with the country name followed by military cemeteries to find them.

5. Add any military cemeteries you find under the military cemeteries heading with a bullet point.

Instructions for Individual Cemeteries

1. Using Google search for cemeteries in the country.

2. Add any cemeteries that are not Jewish or military that you find that are not in Billion Graves for Find A Grave.

3. Go to Wikipedia.

4. Search for the name of your country with the word cemeteries.

5. Add any cemeteries that are not Jewish or military that you find that are not in Billion Graves for Find A Grave.

Instructions for Additional Resources

1. Go to WorldCat.org.

2. Search by country name followed by cemeteries.

3. Click on each relevant search result.

4. Add the link for each one with a bullet point. You can limit this to the top 3-5 results, if you have a lot of results for a country.

3. Include any other resources you find as you were searching that don't belong under the other headings.

Part 5: Check Your Work

1. Click save on your sandbox.

2. Read through the page, looking for any headings that can be removed. For example, if no military cemeteries were found, you can delete that heading.

3. Make any corrections or changes needed and save them.

4. Return to the task list and place the link to your sandbox in the link to sandbox column and add the date to the date completed column.

Google search for cemeteries in your state to find additional online resources. Combine other terms with the state's name: burials, cemeteries, tombstones. Include any statewide burial sites you find.

General Instructions for Searching

Only include state and national resources. Cemeteries from smaller jurisdictions (county or municipal) should be included on their respective county pages, unless they are Jewish or military cemeteries.

Ancestry
FamilySearch Catalog Search for state name. Then scroll to cemeteries.
Google search for state name and cemetery.

Instructions for List of Cemeteries in the State

Keep the links to Find A Grave and BillionGraves at the top of the list.
Go to Find A Grave.
Enter your state's name in the search box to get a list of cemeteries in the state.
Copy the URL for that page.
Replace https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery in the table with the link to the page you just copied.

LDS Badge Instructions

Keep the LDS badge only if the terms LDS or Mormon are used in the names of your links.
You can remove the LDS badge by searching for and deleting the code below.

International Jewish Cemetery Project for the United States

Go to International Jewish Cemetery Project for the United States
Scroll down to your state and click on it.
Copy the URL for the page.
Replace https://iajgscemetery.org/usa/ with the copied URL in the table.

Find A Grave

Go to Find A Grave.
Enter "Jewish Cemeteries" in the Cemetery search box and your state name in the cemetery location box.
Copy the URL of the page.
Replace https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery with the URL you copied.

Instructions for Military Cemeteries

Organize all resources you find under the state or national headings, where appropriate.
Go to Veterans Cemeteries.
Click on your state.
Copy the URL.
Include the URL in the table under "National Cemeteries"
Use Google search with the state name followed by military cemeteries to find them.
