Adding Colonial Records to Country Sidebar[edit | edit source]
Project Leader: Carly Bagley
Example: See right side for example.
Task List: Task List
Purpose: To create colonial records pages for each country of the world. You will need to find information for how to access these records. You will use a lot of your best judgement to make these pages better. Please reach out anytime you have questions or have difficulties knowing where to place information.
Instructions[edit | edit source]
1. First, go to this Google Sheet to see the list of countries that need Colonial Records added to the sidebar.
2. Select the country you want to edit by clicking on it. It will take you to the main topic page for that country in the Research Wiki.
3. Select Edit source.
4. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to where it says Templates used on this page:. (Make sure you select the arrow on the left so that it points down if it isn't already. This'll show you what templates are on this page.). Underneath it, select (edit) right next to the template that looks like this:Template:Country-sidebar
5. Scroll until you find the section for Record Types. You should find some coding that looks like this:
| colspan="2" style="text-align:center; background: #C8C8C8; font-size:14pt"|Record Types |- | style="vertical-align:top; width:50%"| *Church Records *Civil Registration *Military Records | style="vertical-align:top; width:50%"| *Online Records *Religious Records |-
It may not look exactly like this because not all countries have the same topic pages. That's okay, just add Colonial Records where it fit's alphabetically. Since this is for Egypt's colonial records, you will copy this code:
*Colonial Records
And then paste it under Egypt Civil Registration so that it looks like this:
| colspan="2" style="text-align:center; background: #C8C8C8; font-size:14pt"|Record Types |- | style="vertical-align:top; width:50%"| *Church Records *Civil Registration *Colonial Records | style="vertical-align:top; width:50%"| *Military Records *Online Records *Religious Records |-
(You may have to move a bullet point to the other column so they are even. In this case, we had to move Military Records to the next column.)
6. Select Save changes
7. The link in the sidebar for Colonial Records will be red. Click on the link.
8. Your page will look like this (So now someone can start editing on this page):
9. Now that you have finished adding this to sidebar, go back to the Google Spreadsheet.
10. List your name and the date you finished adding the page. And then move onto the next country.
