FamilySearch Wiki:Level 0 Jurisdiction Guidelines

Purpose of Page

 • This page describes the elements and design of the Country page delivered in 2023. Each country page will contain these elements.
 • Note: this template may be used for United State State pages and Canada Province pages (maybe Mexico? and England Counties??)

Example

Elements

 • Title: The title of a Level 0 or country page will be the name of the country with the word "Genealogy" at the end to improve Search Engine Optimization in Google.
 • Breadcrumb or Breadcrumb Trail: A breadcrumb will be used linking back to the region and any other sub-regions that the country may be in; i.e., Europe>British Isles>United Kingdom>England. Note: All subsequent jurisdiction pages will include only the Country in the breadcrumb and the region link will not be included.
 • Sidebar: The universal Template:AllCountrySidebar will be used on this page.
 • SEO Statement: An SEO statement will be added to the top of every country page to increase Search Engine Optimization. This statement should include:
 • Name of Country
 • "Ancestry, family history, genealogy"
 • Major genealogy record types for the country
 • This sentence will be coordinated under the direction of Wiki Executive Council.
 • Header Two: The country page will include the following labels for Header two:
 • Country Information Header: The header, Country Information will be the first header on the page. It will list no more than 6 lines of text and information included will be genealogically relevant: 1) General description of where it is located in the region; 2) creation date; 3) language(s) spoken; 4) Other valid information.
 • Clickable Map/Map: If there are lower jurisdiction pages for a country, a clickable map will be available on the page. For those that do not have lower jurisdiction Wiki pages, a map will appear and the word, Clickable will be removed from the header.
 • List of Jurisdictions: The list of Level 1 jurisdictions of a country should be in alphabetical order and contain links to the Wiki pages. If wiki pages do not exist for these Level 1 jurisdiction pages, they will be listed alphabetically. Red links should NOT appear. Use the <ul class to create the list and display it in the following format:

Example code:

<ul class="column-spacing-fullscreen" style="padding-right:5px;">
 <li>Alabama</li>
</ul>

Example code:

 • Buttons: There will be 3 different colored buttons after the Country Information Header and before the Map header on the page. The following is example of code used on the pages.
<div id="fsButtons"><span class="online_records_button">England Online Genealogy Records</span>
<span class="community_button">Online<br>Research Help</span>
<div id="fsButtons"><span class="red_online_button">Getting<Br>Started</span>

Explanation of button colors:

 • Blue: This will link to the country's Online Genealogy Records Wiki page. If no page for the country exists, do not put a blue button on the page.
 • Purple: Online Research Help: This button will go to this page where the user can choose the way to get online help: schedule a virtual consultation, join a community group, or join a online research group.
 • Red: Getting Started pages should exist for all countries listing basic helpful information to start research in a new location. These pages will be standardized.
 • References: This section will be included on each Level 0 page so the references used for the Country Information section or any other references will appear.
 • The following wikitext code will be listed directly below that header: reflist
 • Category: The country category is the only category needed on this page.
