FamilySearch Wiki:Class Handouts in the Wiki

Policy for Class Handouts - Uploaded Images and/or Wiki Pages

Class Handout Wiki Pages - Background

  • In 2008, it was decided that a Wiki page could be used as a handout or a syllabus for any class or conference.
  • All of these Wiki pages still exist in the Wiki.

Problem:

  • Out-of-date content on the Wiki as these handouts or syllabi are not changed from original form
  • These pages contain outdated and erroneous information.
  • Using a Wiki page for a class handout makes it impossible to keep the information under copyright or protect the information from being changed.
  • New FamilySearch(FS) AI search will bring back incorrect information including handout Wiki pages and there is no guarantee the date of the handout will be provided in the search results.
  • Out of date syllabus pages make it difficult for users to determine if it is correct information or if it is historical information.

Policy Change - 13 August 2024

1. All Wiki pages identified as a handout or syllabus will be deleted. No Wiki pages that are identified as a handout or syllabus will remain in the Wiki regardless of when it was created.
2. Because of FS copyright infringement, FamilySearch Library classes cannot create a Wiki page as their syllabus. However, FS staff can update Wiki pages with information from the handout in context of the Wiki page. Staff can also refer users to different Wiki pages in place of a handout or syllabus.

Uploaded Files of Class Handouts - Background

  • Uploaded PDF versions of a class handout for either FS or other organizations have been added to the Wiki. A FamilySearch copyright license is added to each document uploaded for a FamilySearch Library class.

Problem:

  • Testing of FS AI search of the Wiki has shown that documents/files are indexed along with content on the Wiki pages.
  • Old handouts have been left in the Wiki even if they are not the most current version.
  • We have old FS and other handouts on the Wiki that are out of date and erroneous.
  • Leaving those handouts in the Wiki causes confusion and brings down the quality of the Wiki content and can deliver erraneous information and broken links.

Policy Change - 13 August 2024

1. A yearly audit will be made of all handouts found in the Wiki by Wiki Administration.
2. Old versions of current versions of handouts already in the Wiki will be deleted.
3. Wiki Administration will send a list of recommendations regarding the deletion of a handout to the geographical teams at the FamilySearch Library for input about recommendations submitted. Wiki Administration will make adjustments as requested.
4. After 30 days, recommendations will be carried out.
