Dunbartonshire or the County of Dumbarton is a historic county, lieutenancy area and registration county in the west central Lowlands of Scotland lying to the north of the River Clyde. Since 1996 the area of the pre-1975 county of Dunbartonshire has been split between four council areas:
- East Dunbartonshire Council, (also includes parts of the pre-1975 counties of Stirlingshire and Lanarkshire).
- West Dunbartonshire Council.
- Argyll and Bute Council (which took over the Helensburgh and Lomond part of Dumbarton District).
- North Lanarkshire (for the Cumbernauld area).

- To help the family history researcher we have created a dedicated Family History section in our search room. Here you will find copies of the records that people have found most useful for tracing their ancestors, including monumental inscriptions and lists of men who might be liable for military service. Once you have finished looking at these we may be able to suggest other records that might be of use to you. These include Registers of Electors, Valuation Rolls, poor relief records, school admission registers and estate records.

At ScotlandsPeople one can search the indexes and obtain a digital copy of the record for a small fee within minutes. However, sometimes additional help is available from local registrars. For example, proof of death and close family relationship can make more recent records available that would otherwise be restricted by privacy laws.
