- We hold records that tell the story of over 600 years of Dumfries and Galloway's history. It covers the historic counties of Dumfriesshire, Kirkcudbrightshire, and Wigtownshire, the latter two of which are collectively known as Galloway. It holds official records and those of individuals, families, businesses, and institutions. One of the most popular uses of our archives is for family history and genealogy research. There is a wealth of information available in Dumfries and Galloway to help you find out more about your family's history and trace your ancestors.

At ScotlandsPeople one can search the indexes and obtain a digital copy of the record for a small fee within minutes. However, sometimes additional help is available from local registrars. For example, proof of death and close family relationship can make more recent records available that would otherwise be restricted by privacy laws.
