The Diocese of Norwich forms part of the Province of Canterbury of the Church of England.
History
The diocese traces its roots back to the Diocese of Dunwich founded in 630. In 673 the diocese was divided to create the Diocese of Elmham until the 950s when they were reunited at Elmham. After the Norman invasion the see was first moved to Thetford in 1070 finally moving to Norwich in 1094.
In 1914 the two archdeaconries covering Suffolk (Sudbury and Suffolk, except the Deanery of Lothingland) were transferred to form part of the new the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich.
The present area of the diocese covers:
- Norfolk except the extreme west of the county beyond the River Great Ouse (part of the Diocese of Ely)
- Part of Suffolk (Lothingland)
Archdeaconries and deaneries
The diocese is divided into three Archdeaconries containing a total of twenty-one deaneries:
- the Archdeaconry of Lynn
- comprises the Deaneries of Breckland; Burnham & Walsingham; Heacham & Rising; Holt; and Lynn
- the Archdeaconry of Norfolk
- comprises the Deaneries of Depwade; Great Yarmouth; Humbleyard; Loddon; Redenhall; and Thetford & Rockland
- the Archdeaconry of Norwich
- comprises the Deaneries of Blofield; Dereham in Mitford; Igworth; Lothingland; Norwich East, Norwich North, Norwich South; Repps; and Sparham
