The area was inhabited as follows:

  • Bronze Age: Pile-dwelling settlements (Polada Culture, Lavagnone).
  • 1st century BC - 1st century AD: Roman fundus.
  • 2nd-3rd centuries AD: Roman Villa built.
  • Middle Ages: Development around Borgo Regio.
  • 12th century: Construction of the new castle (Castrum novum).
  • 1449: School was built.
  • 1480: Castle was fortified.
  • 1909: railway line between the station and the port was opened.
  • 1911: interurban steam tramway to Castiglione delle Stiviere opened.
  • 1926: the municipality received the territory of the abolished municipality of Rivoltella.

  • 1426: Republic of Venice.
  • 1797: Brescian Republic, then Cisalpine Republic.

Major events:

  • 249 AD: Emperor Decius defeated Philip the Arab.
  • 312 AD: Constantine's troops pursued those of Maxentius.
  • Middle Ages: Barbarian invasions.
  • 13th century: Cathar heresy.
  • 15th century: War between the Serenissima and the States of Ferrara, Milan, Florence and Naples.
  • 16th century: Repeated sackings, plague, and attempts to gain autonomy.
  • 1568: administrators of the municipality were excommunicated.
  • 1701-1704: War of the Spanish Succession, occupation by imperial and French troops.
  • 1764: Famine and revolt.
  • 1799: Brief occupation by Austro-Russian forces.
  • 1860's Battle of Solferino and San Martino, Desenzano was used as a hospital.
  • 1916: bombed by the Austro-Hungarian air force.
  • World War 2: bombed by allied forces.[1]
