Compare each result from your search with what you know to determine if there is a match. This may require viewing multiple records or images. Keep track of your research in a research log.

What Do I Do Next?

When you have located your ancestor’s record, carefully evaluate each piece of information about them. These pieces of information may give you new biographical details that can lead you to other records about your ancestors.

I Found the Person I Was Looking For, What Now?

  • Add any new information to your records
  • Use the birth date along with the place of birth to find the family in census records
  • Use the information found to locate church and land records
  • The father’s occupation can lead you to employment records or other types of records such as military records
  • The name of the officiator is a clue to their religion

I Can’t Find the Person I’m Looking For, What Now?

  • Look for variant spellings of the names. You should also look for alias names, nicknames and abbreviated names
  • Search the indexes and records of nearby localities. Records of Delaware residents may also be recorded in adjoining states
