Danish Provsti
A provsti or deanery was an eccleasiastical jursidiction smaller than a stift (diocese) and larger than a pastorat (chapelry). The provsti recorded probates for parish priests, school masters, and their families up until 1807, but the exact year for your locality can vary. If your ancestor was part of the local clergy, this is where you should check for their probate records. The school masters count as part of the clergy because education was run by the church.
Tips
Probates for the clergy are called gejstlige skifteprotokoller.
Erik Brejl has abstracted most or all of the provsti's probate records. His abstracts can be freely accessed on his website by clicking here. Brejl provides reference notes to help you then find the original image of a probate you find on his website. Additionally, Brejl standardizes the place names and names of individuals. This allows you to type CTR+F and search for a name and find all references to your ancestor with that name without having to guess at every possible spelling variation your ancestor's name could have in the records.
