- San Juan Bautista de Duaca was founded in 1620 by order of the then Governor and Captain General of the Province of Venezuela.
- On December 27, 1899, the Duaca district was created.
- On January 17, 1900, the name was changed to Crespo.
- The capital of the municipality is Duaca.
