Background

Chinese immigration to Mexico began during the colonial era. The largest immigration came in two waves, from 1880s to 1940s, and early 21st century. Between 1880 and 1910, Chinese migrant workers came to Mexico for building of the railroad and to populate the northern states. However, strong anti-Chinese sentiment led to deportations and illegal expulsions of Chinese-Mexican families in the 1930s. Between the late 1930s and 1980s, efforts to repatriate Chinese-Mexican families resulted in two major waves of return of Chinese Mexicans. [1]
