Background[edit | edit source]

The first settlement of Chinese in Canada began in 1780s. In 1788, about 120 Chinese contract laborers arrived at Vancouver Island, brought in by British fur trader John Meares.

A large number of Chinese appeared in the Colony of Vancouver Island in 1858 as part of the migration from California during the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush. And eventually, many Chinese from China also came.Another wave of Chinese migrants came to Canada during 1871-1882 as railroad workers. [1]
