Charente Department

History[edit | edit source]

Charente is one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on 4 March 1790. It was created from the former province of Angoumois. Angoumois was a county and province of France. Its capital was Angoulême, and it nearly corresponded to the Charente Department.[1]
